Sylvain and Philip

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY

Sylvain Cholette, owner of Volvox Sport, never intended to start a business.
A volleyball enthusiast, Sylvain began playing the sport during his youth and later worked as a referee. His love for volleyball helped him establish connections within the community, which led him to represent products like volleyball shoes and kneepads for Asics Inc. To supplement his income, Sylvain began selling volleyball equipment directly from his garage. Initially, his clients were friends and acquaintances, with his business gaining traction mainly through word-of-mouth at tournaments.

From Garage to Storefront:
As demand increased, Asics Canada encouraged Sylvain to open a store. In June 2004, the first Volvox Sport boutique opened its doors in Montreal. The shop quickly grew in popularity as the first specialized volleyball store in Canada. By 2005, the business needed more space and relocated to a larger premises in the same area.

Innovative Strategies:
To reach more customers, Sylvain launched a mobile store, bringing his products directly to tournaments and schools. This mobile initiative allowed Volvox Sport to serve distant communities. In addition to selling equipment, the company started offering custom-designed uniforms. Investing in specialized machinery, Volvox Sport began handling logos and personalization requests in-house, ensuring faster turnaround times and attracting more clients. One standout product was jogger pants, which became a top seller.

Family Participation:
One of Sylvain’s son Philip began working part-time in the shop while also playing volleyball at his school and later playing Division 1 in Cegep. With their combined volleyball knowledge they were able to established themselves as the place to go for volleyball equipment and advice. Still to this day they are known for their great advice to offer the right equipment for the players needs which puts them appart from the competition.

Challenges and Resilience:
In 2015, a fire in a neighboring property caused smoke damage, forcing Volvox Sport to relocate quickly. Despite the disruption, the business reopened in a larger, more functional space. The new location was appreciated by customers, who enjoyed the improved layout and facilities.

Future Plans:
Sylvain retired from his postal job in 2016 to focus entirely on Volvox Sport. Meanwhile, Philip pursued university studies in business management to better equip himself to lead the company. Together, they plan to take Volvox Sport to new heights, blending family values with a passion for volleyball.
